Southern Nevada awarded nearly $6.6 million for homeless programs

Southern Nevada’s effort to assist the homeless population will receive nearly $6.6 million this year.

The money, awarded from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Continuum of Care Homeless Funds, will support various programs including more than 600 beds in transitional and permanent housing.

“More than 33,000 Southern Nevadans including families with children, couples and individuals of all ages will be homeless at some point this year,” SNRPC Regional Initiatives Coordinator Tyrone Thompson said. “But thanks to the many great programs and services funded by this grant, we are making a difference.”

The Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition’s Regional Initiatives Office applies for this funding annually and monitors the programs receiving the money.

Southern Nevada received about the same funding last year.

Local organizations hoping to receive funding next year are being asked to attend one of two upcoming meetings at 9 a.m. Aug. 12 and 13 in the third floor training room at the Clark County Social Service Department building at 1600 Pinto Lane.
