Red Bull manny mania skateboarding contest hits Henderson in June

The Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water St., plans to host a qualifier for the international skateboard competition Red Bull Manny Mania, which highlights manual balance tricks and the technical side of skateboarding. The competition, which features 45 to 50 competitors ages 14 to 25, starts at 6 p.m. June 18.

Entry fee for competitors is free, and athletes can sign up at the event. Practice begins at 4 p.m.

The winner from the Las Vegas stop will earn a trip to Los Angeles to compete in the U.S. National Final on July 9. The winner from the L.A. competition will represent the United States at the Red Bull Manny Mania World Final, where amateurs from 32 countries meet to determine the global champion.

'The Lion King' offers Locals discount
on children's tickets throughout May

In celebration of its second anniversary on the Strip, Disney's "The Lion King" at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino is introducing its first locals' ticket offer just for children. For weekend matinee performances during May, each adult purchasing a full-price ticket can purchase two child tickets for only $15.

Local residents can get discounted tickets to 'Matsuri' at Imperial Palace

From now until May 31, local residents can purchase tickets to "Matsuri," a production of 15 Japanese acrobats, gymnasts, dancers and comedians who perform at the Imperial Palace, for $20, plus box office fees and tax, with a valid Nevada ID.

Since the earthquake and tsunami struck Japan in March, the show has been collecting donations at each performance to assist with relief efforts.

In addition, through May, "Matsuri" will donate $5 for each locals ticket purchased to the American Red Cross. The show already has raised more than $2,000 and hopes to reach $10,000 by the end of May.

"Matsuri" plays at 4 p.m. Saturdays through Wednesdays and 8 p.m. Fridays. Tickets are available at the Imperial Palace box office, at vegas.com or by calling 888-777-7664.

former review-journal editor's exhibit open at left of center art gallery

A tribute to the photography of the late Las Vegas Review-Journal assistant city editor Warren Bates is on display at Left of Center Art Gallery, 2207 W. Gowan Road.

The exhibit is called "Road to Zzyzx." Its images document deserted areas in and around the desert settlement. It is scheduled to run through June 4.

Bates died in April 2010, seven miles outside the California ghost town of Amboy, more than 130 miles from Las Vegas, when a train broadsided his car. He was 49.

Concert Saturday at the Cannery

A free concert is set for Saturday at the Cannery, 2121 E. Craig Road. Several popular groups from the 1960s and 70s, including Sonny Geraci, Brenton Woods, The Contours featuring Sylvester Potts and The Happenings, are set to perform.

The concert gets under way at 5 p.m. Before the concert, classic car and hot rod owners are encouraged to attend the public drive-in and display their vehicles on Aerojet Way.

The first 200 drivers to arrive get the best display spots for their cars and will receive a free T-shirt. Concert tickets are free and available while supplies last at the front desk.

Caliente Noche Latina, Volume 1 scheduled at Aliante Station
