A commercial truck carrying nearly 200 pigs overturned Monday afternoon in North Las Vegas, killing about one-fifth of the swine and snarling traffic for about three hours, police said.
The accident occurred about 4:30 p.m. as the driver was turning onto Cheyenne Avenue from Losee Road, just west of the ramp for southbound Interstate 15, said Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Kevin Honea. No people were injured in the accident.
The tractor was carrying 182 pigs and 39 of them died when the truck turned onto its side, Honea said. The incident caused officials to close eastbound Cheyenne for about three hours.
Witnesses told police that the truck was going slowly when it overturned. The cause of the accident is being investigated. There was no indication the driver was drinking or impaired by drugs, Honea said.
Honea said no pigs were roaming the road.
“There was no breach in the trailer,” Honea said. “Every pig was contained within the trailer.”
