Two sets of bodies are found

The discovery of a torched car containing two charred bodies in a remote location in the southwestern Las Vegas Valley is being investigated as a double homicide, Las Vegas police said Tuesday.

Law enforcement agencies have recovered four unidentified bodies in isolated valley locations on consecutive days this week.

Homicide Lt. Lew Roberts of the Metropolitan Police Department said the bodies found Tuesday are unrelated to the two bodies found Monday afternoon by North Las Vegas police at the base of the Sheep Mountains.

The locations where the two sets of bodies were discovered are about 30 miles apart on opposite sides of the valley.

Although Roberts doesn’t recall another two-day period where so many bodies were found at separate desert locations, he said there have been multiple bodies recovered within the same week.

“We’ve had that happen before,” Roberts said. “It’s a big county.”

The latest discovery was made Tuesday morning by an ATV rider near a detention basin in the area of state Route 160 and Hualapai Way.

Police initially said there was one body in the back seat of a four-door sedan. They later discovered another body under the first.

The bodies were so severely burned that Roberts said investigators couldn’t determine the victims’ genders.

“They are burned to the point where they are just skeletons,” he said. “There’s no way to tell until there is an autopsy.”

Roberts said police believe the bodies might have been in the desert for three to five days.

Police also couldn’t identify what kind of car the victims were in because it was severely burned. There was no license plate on it, Roberts said. He said Tuesday evening that police had no leads or suspects in the case.

On Monday, North Las Vegas police discovered two bodies off a remote stretch of road about two or three miles north of the Las Vegas Beltway and Losee Road.

North Las Vegas police Monday evening would only say the investigation was ongoing. The agency wouldn’t comment on the manner of the deaths or the gender of the victims and their approximate ages.

The bodies were found near a red pickup that didn’t appear damaged from the outside.

Several calls to North Las Vegas police officials were not returned Tuesday.

Anyone with information relating to the cases can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 385-5555. Those with information on the bodies found Tuesday can call the Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Section at 828-3521.
