UNLV student arrested after mother, father, sister were stabbed, police say

A 19-year-old UNLV student who had been arguing with his parents over his grades stabbed his mother, father and 14-year-old sister at their home Tuesday morning, Las Vegas police said.

The father suffered from multiple stab wounds to his arms and chest, the mother had defensive wounds on her hands, and their daughter's face was lacerated, police said.

Police said Nathaniel Baria attacked his parents with a knife about 6 a.m. inside the master bedroom of their house on the corner of Linn Lane and Washington Avenue.

Sgt. Chuck Pierce, with Las Vegas police's domestic violence unit, said the family did not alert authorities to the stabbing. On Tuesday morning, the mother drove her daughter to the hospital to seek treatment for her injuries.

Hospital staff alerted the police, who then went to the house and arrested Baria.

Neighbors said the family had lived in the neighborhood for at least nine years. They were known as quiet and no one could recall any family disturbances.

"Why would you do that (stab relatives)? It just boggles the mind," said Antoinette Girard, a neighbor.
