Carlos Santana has decided against a Vegas wedding, despite living here part time while performing regularly at the Hard Rock.
"For some reason, we’re gonna try something different," he tells me in his "last interview of the year."
"I’m planning to get married Dec. 19 in Maui," Santana says.
After a divorce a few years ago, Santana, 63, proposed to his drummer, Cindy Blackman, onstage in Tinsley Park, Ill., in July, after she gave him a drum solo.
You might remember Blackman as the drummer with the great big hair in Lenny Kravitz’s video "Are You Gonna Go My Way."
Blackman, 51, has a secret skill. She knows karate.
"I know how to behave — so she doesn’t use the karate on me," Santana jokes and laughs.
Santana says he’s grateful because it’s been an incredible year of good health, prosperity and inspiration.
But he didn’t fulfill any of his New Year’s resolutions.
"My goal was to learn to cook bouillabaisse, to learn to surf and to play golf. I haven’t done one of the three yet, but the year is not over."
After his honeymoon, Santana plays the Hard Rock Jan. 5, 8-9, 12, 14-15 and 16.
Last week, a 12-year-old from Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Clubhouse won a contest by illustrating a Santana T-shirt to be sold at the concerts. The shirt depicts Santana flashing a peace sign. Santana chose the winner.
The Boys & Girls Club gave the child’s name only as Imani, who said: "Since people from all over the world come to see his show, I will be able to say that someone in Europe is wearing my artwork!"
CAROLLA MEETS THE MARATHON
Podcasting giant Adam Carolla performed Saturday at House of Blues, then hung out late into the night and had to wake up early Sunday to fly back to California.
So he was checking out of Mandalay Bay at 6 a.m. when he got a "surreal" eyeful in the lobby: mobs of runners prepping for the marathon.
"The only thing worse than being hung over on three hours and 45 minutes’ sleep" was dealing with racers in leg warmers, spandex and sweatbands, he joked on his Sunday evening podcast.
"I guarantee there were people walking back from that casino broke, hung over, spent their last 18 bucks … staggering back to the wreckage of their lives — and had to pass a bunch of couples getting ready for a 26-mile run."
