Wildlife officials euthanize bear captured on Tahoe’s south shore

CARSON CITY — Nevada Department of Wildlife officials have destroyed a black bear they say was a public safety threat at Lake Tahoe.

The 3-year-old male was captured a second time on Sunday in the Glenbrook area on Tahoe’s south shore. It was first captured and tagged in late June after reports of a bear attempting to break into homes.

Biologists say the bear showed no fear of humans and is believed to have killed a goat.

It’s the third bear euthanized by NDOW this year, and experts fear more bear encounters are likely because of a lack of food after two years of drought.

This is the time of year bears dramatically increase their food consumption to prepare for hibernation.
