I have a question for County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani, D-public employees.
Just how would universal health care solve the problem of fiscal hemorrhaging at UMC? Would that mean fewer illegal immigrants would be treated on the taxpayer dime? Would more poor people start paying for treatment with that tax subsidized insurance, or would they simply demand more care since someone else is footing the bill?
"We have an obligation to assist residents with medical care," Commissioner Giunchigliani is quoted as saying in today’s paper. "If we had universal health care in this country, we wouldn’t be having this problem."
Frankly, all that would be different is that, instead of digging the money out of the right county tax money pocket, we’d be pulling it out of the left federal tax money pocket.
When the county hospital has an $82 million annual deficit, surely we should be hearing something from the commissioners besides shrugs.
On Wednesday the commissioners heard how Washoe took its public hospital private. Was anyone listening?
