Mariah Carey graces DJ booth at Mirage’s 1 Oak

Who wears short shorts (and can now add DJing to her resume)?

As of Sunday morning, that would be the one and only Mariah Carey.

The 47-year-old Grammy winner arrived at The Mirage’s 1 Oak Nightclub around 1 a.m. in a cropped, black leather jacket, thigh-highs and barely-there bottoms to step into the DJ booth.

The Caesars Palace headliner is no stranger to Vegas, and during her brief stay at the club, Carey partied like she’d been there and done that.

She left after only an hour of sipping on rose and cocktails, blowing kisses to the crowd and singing along to her songs, like “Honey” and “Touch My Body” and others from the ’80s and ’90s.

CRISS ANGEL

Like Criss Angel, surrounded by a ray of light coming down from the ceiling, a who’s who of Las Vegas entertainment will descend upon, well, Las Vegas on Thursday night.

In The Velvet Room at Luxor, celebrities such as Flavor Flav, Carrot Top, Terry Fator and Andrew Dice Clay will come together to celebrate the premiere of Angel’s latest magic show, “Mindfreak Live.”

Down a carpet as black as the magician’s wardrobe, Angel will appear, kicking off the grand opening before taking the stage.

GONDOLA SCHOOL

The demand for gondolier jobs apparently is so high that, through The Venetian’s new Gondola University, tourists have the opportunity to pay the casino for the opportunity to operate a boat.

A news release from the Venice-themed resort explained what prompted its new educational program, saying: “On any day, the number one question asked to a gondolier at The Venetian Las Vegas is, ‘How can I become a gondolier?’”

If the Rowing 101 class’ $199 price tag seems a little steep for piloting a gondola through a Las Vegas casino, those who pass will receive a hat and T-shirt.

BEER PONG

The World Series of Beer Pong is a thing, and it’s been happening in Las Vegas for the past 11 years.

On Thursday, 32 local teams of two will vie for the chance to win complimentary registration to the championship in a qualifying tournament at Beer Park Las Vegas.

It may not seem like something that would earn one anything but a stomachache: throwing a pingpong ball into beer-filled red Solo cups with the goal of making your opponent drink the most alcohol. But, in this case, someone is going home with $50,000 at the completion of the World Series.

Entry into this first phase of the competition is free, so all you have to lose are your inhibitions and, potentially, your pride.

The series ends in July, when competitors from around the country come to the Westgate Las Vegas for the finale.

FRANKIE MORENO

Hometown favorite Frankie Moreno’s attempt to jump to a bigger level of showroom stardom seems headed for a more modest future.

“We are on next weekend, and after that we’ll see what the schedule’s going to be,” Moreno says of his “Under the Influence,” which could be reduced to a weekends-only schedule if it continues at Planet Hollywood.

The past week “got a little chaotic,” he says, between Moreno and Base Entertainment, which produces the show and also operates the theater that Moreno shares with ventriloquist Paul Zerdin on a lease from Caesars Entertainment.

The show opened April 23, but recent weeks brought canceled shows — “I am so sorry. It’s not my doings,” Moreno tweeted at one point — and reducing the schedule to Fridays and Saturdays.

The problem stems from the show’s high overhead and break-even point, and whether the answer is to cut costs (Moreno’s preference) or run the current show fewer times per week.

“We need to sit down with Base and figure out how to make it a more sustainable, long-term situation,” Moreno said Sunday.
