FROM OUR READERS: Day laborers and the rule of law
To the editor:
Did I read the quote from immigration lawyer, Vicenta Montoya, correctly in your July 20 article," Plan would regulate day labor hires"?
Is it possible she had the audacity to suggest that Nevada taxpayers provide "portable bathrooms" for day laborers who urinate and defecate on our streets?
Is it possible she had the audacity to suggest that city efforts to curb such illegal, disease-spreading activities constitute "a tendency to over-regulate"?
The city of Las Vegas should not only intervene in the congregation of "day laborers," they should task Metro to check their immigration status, fine businesses and individuals who knowingly employ illegal aliens, and jail anyone who breaks our laws.
Ms. Montoya's interests might be served by catering to common criminals, but the city of Las Vegas has a duty to preserve the rule of law. Mayor Oscar Goodman should be lauded for his efforts.

Private property
To the editor:
In response to your article, "Plan would regulate day labor hires":
Attorney Vicenta Montoya felt that it was only a small group of local residents who were complaining about the day laborers congregating on the street corners. And her answer to them was to drive on by.
The truth is that many of the day laborers congregate on private property. They also urinate and throw their trash on the ground in view of the stores on those properties. These activities drive off customers.
So a lot of the complaints about the day laborers are coming from property owners and store owners, not people just diving by.

Kenny case
To the editor:
What is going on when someone such as former county commissioner Erin Kenny, a self-confessed crook who turned her back on the people who elected her to office and bought a nice big house with the proceeds of her crimes, can walk away with a slap on the hand?
As a senior citizen, I am ashamed of members of our local governments have put up with all the corruption. Isn't it about time we cleaned house?
Kenny should have gotten a longer sentence and any one in local government who is guilty of any crime should be charged to the fullest extent possible. I am sick and tired of our elected people screwing the public.
