LETTERS: PUC rules in favor of fairness

Net metering decision

Regarding the ruling on rooftop solar rates ("PUC OKs new solar rates," Dec. 23 Review-Journal), net metering is no more and no less an extension of a co-generation facility in small scale. When the original rooftop solar owners began sending power to the grid, they had an agreement on the wholesale power compensation they would receive from NV Energy. There was no special treatment, no federal government subsidies, just business. Whether it was economically feasible and in the right neighborhood was considered.

Now, the Nevada solar companies meet none of the original co-generation criterion. The unsightly rooftop industrial complexes they have created are a blight to nice, aesthetically acceptable neighborhoods. If the solar companies had to pay the going cost of these solar cells, they wouldn't have built them.

The payback on these rooftop installations would be unobtainable without taxpayers' hard-earned money, which makes it somewhat feasible. The contracts with solar companies allow them some relief from extreme costs in the agreements, which put a lien on the customer's home if the contract is not fully adhered to by the homeowner. It is a political boondoggle and will not work at night or without NV Energy's support. Try running a five-ton air conditioner on a battery.

The moochers will have to pay the fair rate. Co-generation is wholesale power. Where do these rooftop solar owners think they are going to get a noncompetitive rate when they fall into the wholesale power sales criterion? The Public Utilities Commission and Gov. Brian Sandoval are 100 percent right in their decision for fairness in all co-generation payments.

PUC a misnomer

I guess I was wrong in believing PUC stood for Public Utilities Commission, when in fact it seems to stand for Protect the Utility from Competition ("PUC OKs new solar rates," Dec. 23 Review-Journal).

The PUC's rooftop solar ruling, supported by our "energy" governor, Brian Sandoval, has not only given NV Energy the license to steal, but will result in the destruction of the rooftop solar industry and the elimination of 6,000 good-paying jobs.

Protecting a predator

I was appalled that Hayden Elementary School music teacher Jeremiah Mazo was convicted of child molestation after a North Las Vegas judge dismissed similar charges in 2008 and sealed the case ("Sentenced for sexual abuse," Dec. 10 Review-Journal). Then, surprise, surprise, thanks to stipulations in teachers union contracts, he got his job back, whereupon he continued to molest children.

This man is a monster and should have been put away in 2008. The North Las Vegas judge and the teachers union are, in my opinion, guilty of aiding and abetting a child molester. They not only allowed him to escape imprisonment, but put him back to work with the very children he was molesting. Then this predator says he found Jesus and all is good now.

Not one mention was made about his remorse over destroying the lives of our little innocents; it was all about his wanting leniency because he was singing worship hymns in the courtroom.

His defense attorney also suggested that as a Filipino, Mazo may interact differently with children. My head was about to explode after reading that! I suggest the parents of the children victimized by this predator file a massive lawsuit against the North Las Vegas judge and the teachers union for their complicity in furthering the activities of this pedophile.
