While Jack Frost may not be nipping at our noses yet, winter in Southern Nevada is right around the corner—which means it’s time to change your watering clock to follow the community’s mandatory winter watering restrictions, in effect Nov. 1 through Feb. 28.
During the winter months, sprinkler irrigation is limited to one assigned day per week; sprinkler watering is always prohibited on Sunday. Don’t forget to adjust your irrigation clock to coincide with the end of Daylight Saving Time at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 3.
You can save both water and money on your monthly bill this winter by running your drip system once every seven to 14 days, as water-efficient trees and plants need much less water than grass to thrive even during the coldest months of the year. Remember a simple five-word rule of thumb: Drip It, Don’t Drown It!
- Set your spray irrigation to water during the mid-morning hours to prevent ice from forming on lawns and sidewalks.
- Follow the seasonal watering restrictions year-round, and you could save as much as $300 on your water bills annually.
- However, failure to follow the seasonal watering schedule could result in a costly water-waste fee of up to $5,000. So, be chill—don’t waste water!
Saving as much water as we can, especially during the cooler winter months, is vitally important as our community relies on Lake Mead for 90 percent of our water supply. Every drop counts when it comes to outdoor watering.
