Tackling the tundra: Top tips for 2015 snow removal

(BPT) – For much of the nation, freezing temperatures, ice storms and snowy blizzards will take over this winter. When it comes time to clear the driveway and sidewalks, there are smart measures you can take to increase efficiency, expedite the process and get back indoors fast.

To conquer the elements, start with the right equipment and stick to these time-tested removal methods from the Craftsman brand:

Shovel as it snows
It’s easier to clear your driveway or sidewalk as the snow falls rather than waiting until it’s over. Wet compacted snow can weigh over 20 pounds per cubic foot, according to The Weather Channel, so a big accumulation means extra hard work. Going out several times and shoveling smaller amounts is more manageable.

Wax and relax
Work smarter, not harder, by waxing the blade of your shovel. This helps prevent the snow from sticking to the blade and slowing you down. The easiest way to do this is to apply a quick coating of non-stick kitchen oil spray.

Plow through blizzards
Snow blowers are indispensable in big snow storms or when you have a large area to clear. Available in both 24- and 28-inches, the Craftsman Pro Series 3-Stage Snow blower has zero-turn steering which provides on-command maneuverability even in the iciest conditions, ensuring you can get the job done quickly and get back inside sooner.

Mind the roof
Be mindful of excess snow that’s building up on your roof. Too much snow on rooftops can cause ice dams, shingle damage or interior leaks when the snow thaws. Use a roof rake to help remove snow from building up on the edge of your roof.

Clear quietly
No one wants to wake the neighbors while clearing the snow either early in the morning or late at night, but waiting is often not an option. The Craftsman 28” 243cc Dual Stage Snow blower with Quiet Engine keeps noise levels to a minimum without sacrificing power. It’s up to 45 percent quieter than Craftsman’s standard 208cc engine.

Stay comfortable
Get gear now to stay comfortable all winter long. With a flip of a switch the Craftsman 12 Volt Heated Jacket uses five heating zones to keep your core warm. Additionally, always wear durable gloves and protect your head from the elements with a hat and scarf or neck mask.

Shake off branches
Heavy snow can snap tree branches in an instant. If you see branches sagging under snow, give them a quick shake to remove the buildup. No one wants branches to break and fall on a car, into a window or on a person.
