51s rally for 10-8 victory over Redbirds

Las Vegas scored two runs in the eighth inning as the 51s erased a five-run deficit to defeat the Memphis Redbirds 10-8 on Tuesday night at Cashman Field.

Andrew Brown started the rally with a one-out double, and he scored when Cory Vaughn lined a two-out single to right, breaking an 8-8 tie.

Allan Dykstra added an RBI single for the final margin.

Las Vegas (47-32) fell behind 8-3 after four innings, but the 51s rallied and tied the game 8-8 in the seventh.

Matt den Dekker, who had a walk-off homer in the 10th inning Monday, came through with a two-out, two-run homer as a pinch hitter in the seventh to tie the game. It was den Dekker’s sixth homer.

Memphis (38-41) scored in each of the first four innings to take the early lead.

Randal Grichuk lined a three-run homer off the foul pole in left field with two outs in the second to give the Redbirds a 5-2 lead. Memphis had tied the game earlier in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Durango High product Tommy Pham.

Grichuk’s homer originally was ruled a foul ball, but after a brief discussion between umpires, it was changed to a home run, his 12th of the season.

All four second-inning runs were unearned after a throwing error by third baseman Josh Satin.

Neither pitching staff was sharp, as Memphis pitchers walked eight and Las Vegas hurlers seven. The Redbirds had walked 11 on Monday.

Buddy Carlyle (3-1), the fifth pitcher for the 51s, pitched two scoreless innings to get the win.

The 51s are off Wednesday and begin a four-game series Thursday at Sacramento.
