Peterson goes 3-for-4, drives in three as Isotopes down 51s
Brock Peterson went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to help the Albuquerque Isotopes to a 6-2 win over the Las Vegas 51s at Cashman Field in the first game of a five-game series on Thursday.
51s starter Noah Syndergaard allowed just two earned runs in five innings, but hurt himself when he walked the opposing pitcher to start the third.
Syndergaard’s second walk of the inning loaded the bases for Peterson, who fouled off three two-strike pitches before doubling to left-center field to score two runners and give the Isotopes (55-64) a 3-1 lead.
The 51s (66-54) cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth on a bloop RBI double by Cesar Puello and an RBI single by Daniel Muno, but Syndergaard hurt himself again in the fifth. He walked Joc Pederson with one out, then fired an errant pickoff throw well over the head of 6-foot-5-inch first baseman Allan Dykstra, allowing Pederson to go all the way to third. He came home to score an unearned run on a double by Tim Federowicz.
Syndergaard (8-6) allowed seven hits in five innings with four walks and four strikeouts.
Albuquerque added a run in the seventh when Clint Robinson hit a towering opposite-field homer to left, his 15th of the season, to make it 5-2. The Isotopes made it 6-2 in the ninth when Brock Peterson hit a pop fly that dropped behind a drawn-in infield for an RBI single.
Las Vegas’ Matt den Dekker, who entered the game as the Pacific Coast League’s leading hitter, was 2-for-3 with two doubles to raise his average to .334. He now has 31 doubles on the season.
The series continues at 7:05 tonight, with Albuquerque’s Barry Enright (0-2, 8.18) scheduled to face John Lannan (1-1, 4.26).
