Aztecs sluggish in win

SAN DIEGO – Jamaal Franklin had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Chase Tapley scored 14 points to lead No. 19 San Diego State to a 72-57 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday in its final tuneup before opening Mountain West play.

Freshman Winston Shepard added 11 points for the Aztecs (12-2), who were playing for the first time since losing 68-67 to No. 3 Arizona on Christmas night.

“It was awful. It was disappointing. But we got the victory, so that’s good,” Franklin said.

San Diego State visits Fresno State on Wednesday in its conference opener.

Stephon Carter scored 21 points for the Roadrunners (6-11), who lost for the third time this season to a Mountain West school.

Xavier Thames went out with a lower back strain early in the second half for San Diego State and didn’t return.

■ Colorado State 62, Texas-El Paso 58 – At Fort Collins, Colo., Greg Smith scored 18 points and Colton Iverson 17 as the Rams (12-2) beat the Miners (6-6) for their sixth straight victory.

Wes Eikmeier scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half for Colorado State, which extended the nation’s fourth-longest home winning streak to 21 games.

■ Wyoming 59, Southern Methodist 56 – At Dallas, Leonard Washington scored 19 points, including a fast-break dunk with 16 seconds left, as the Cowboys (13-0) edged the Mustangs (10-5).

■ Boise State 64, Texas-Arlington 46 – At Arlington, Texas, Jeff Elorriaga scored 22 points to lead the Broncos (11-2) past the Mavericks (6-5). It was Boise State’s fifth straight victory.

■ Richmond 91, Air Force 68 – At Richmond, Va., Kendall Anthony scored a career-high 31 points, leading the Spiders (10-5) over the Falcons. Michael Lyons paced Air Force (8-4) with 19 points.
