1:43 p.m. — The doors are open and the players are on their way out. We’ll be back tomorrow with live coverage of Team USA’s scrimmage at the Thomas & Mack Center
1:33 p.m. — A lighthearted moment as Clippers center DeAndre Jordan and Dallas Mavericks swingman Chandler Parsons acknowledge each other with a smile and a wave. Jordan, who was talking on the phone when Parsons walked by, made headlines this summer with a last second free agency flip-flop from the Mavs back to the Clippers. It appears on the surface the two have since made up.
1:13 p.m. — Practice is wrapping up, with most of the players sitting down to get their knees iced.
Orlando Magic guard Victor Oladipo is still on the court shooting free throws as kids and Team USA equipment staffers start to take over. It’s the second day the 24-year-old has taken some extra reps. Joining him is Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving, who hasn’t played much these past couple days as he recovered from a calf injury sustained in this year’s NBA Finals.
12:53 p.m. — The drills have stayed pretty competitive here on LeBron’s court. On the other side, Hopkins engages with a group of younger players including Green, Barnes, Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal and Milwaukee Bucks guard Michael Carter-Williams and Sacramento Kings big man DeMarcus Cousins.
Hopkins, slated to be the next Syracuse coach when Boeheim retires, has a unique way of interacting with players. After fouling Cousins during a drill, Hopkins laughed it off and walked over to high-five the disgruntled big man while Cousins stormed off the court.
It’s one way to manage so many personalities and egos at once.
12:40 p.m. — It’s getting competitive here on LeBron’s court. A shooting drill with James, Westbrook and Anthony against Curry, Durant and Paul is tied at 5-5. James is calling out the score after every bucket.
12:21 p.m. — All eyes on LeBron as the teams mix up into three new groups. James joins Curry, Westbrook, Paul, Anthony and Durant in a mid range shooting drill. Players are dribbling in from outside the arc, around Team USA assistant Monty Williams and pulling up from about 15 feet. Except for Curry, he’s stepping back and launching 3-pointers.
Team USA head Coach Mike Krzyzewski and manager of basketball operations Jerry Colangelo are watching the group closely, chatting on the sidelines.
Another cool sight from the sidelines, University of Kentucky head coach John Calipari sits between Washington Wizards guard John Wall and New Orleans Pelicans center Anthony Davis, his former players at UK.
12:08 p.m. — Syracuse Orange assistant coach Sam Hopkins has the most festive group of players on his side of the court, Team White’s big men. They’re arguably the hardest working of the four groups right now, running a combination of inside post drills and drills practicing their mid-range jumpers. Spurs forward LaMarcus Aldridge and Warriors forward Draymond Green are the only players consistently hitting from beyond 10 feet in a group that includes Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond, Denver Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried and Houston Rockets big man Dwight Howard.
11:56 a.m. — Like yesterday, Durant is having trouble finding the 3-ball here at the start of practice. He found his touch toward the end yesterday, but he’s likely still shaking off some rust after playing in only 27 games last season.
11:40 a.m. — On the near court, closest to the media, Team White is warming up with leg lifts and a couple laps from one side of the court to the other.
The big men from Team White take one side of the near court, and the guards and small forwards the other. Unlike yesterday, Stephen Curry is participating in shooting drills with Team White here early on. He’s joined by Golden State Warriors teammate Harrison Barnes, Oklahoma City Thunder teammates Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, Chicago Bulls guard Jimmy Butler and Orlando Magic swingman Tobias Harris, among others.
11:35 a.m. — Team USA is starting their second of two practices here in Las Vegas earlier than expected. And unlike yesterday, Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James is in the house. Wearing #27 with team Blue, James is running through calisthenics alongside Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris Paul, New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony and Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan.
