Penn State fined $10K for coach’s comments

The Big Ten fined Penn State $10,000 for coach Patrick Chambers’ critical remarks about the officiating after a loss to Maryland on Saturday night.

In a statement, the conference said Chambers violated the Big Ten’s Sportsmanship Policy.

Chambers was upset about an offensive foul call against Penn State center Jordan Dickerson with 1:50 left in the Big Ten game. As teammate Geno Thorpe was driving to the basket, Dickerson went to set a screen, was pulled to the floor by Maryland forward Evan Smotrycz and called for a foul.

Replays showed Smotrycz hooking his arm around Dickerson, who fouled out of the game. Maryland went on to post a 76-73 victory.

Chambers said after the game it was “the worst call that I’ve ever seen in my entire life.”

“They’re pulling Jordan Dickerson down,” Chambers said. ” … It makes no sense. … It’s a joke the way we were officiated. It’s disappointing.”

Penn State is 15-11 overall and 3-10 in the Big Ten this season.
