The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women’s basketball team came into the Western Athletic Conference tournament as legitimate contenders to dethrone New Mexico State.
Rio Grande Valley snapped New Mexico State’s 15-game winning streak last weekend, but that momentum didn’t carry into Wednesday’s quarterfinals against No. 7 seed Chicago State.
The No. 2 seed Vaqueros needed a furious comeback to defeat the Cougars 60-52 at Orleans Arena. Rio Grande Valley will face Cal State Bakersfield in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
Rio Grande Valley trailed 50-41 with 7:40 remaining before finishing on a 19-2 run. Shawnte Goff scored a game-high 22 points for the Vaqueros.
Utah Valley 61, Missouri-Kansas City 53 — No. 4 Utah Valley avoided a late surge by No. 5 UMKC to reach the semifinals. Mariah Seals, Deijah Blanks and Sam Loggins combined for 37 points for the Wolverines. UMKC forwards Kiana Law and Taylor Leathers scored 12 apiece. Utah Valley faces top seed New Mexico State at noon Friday.
Cal State Bakersfield 62, Seattle 55 — Erika Williams scored 19 points, and No. 3 Bakersfield held off No. 6 Seattle to advance. Batabe Zempare added 10 points for the Roadrunners. Kaylee Best and Tal Sahar each scored 13 for Seattle.
