Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 7 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Athens – Huge class relief from the Pirates Bounty to this $16K claimer; perfect draw for Rafael Bejarano to stalk the early speed and come grinding late.
4 Moonlight Meeting – Claimed two races ago by trainer Bob Hess; won for fun in last under jockey Victor Espinoza and now faces a similar kind of test.
Long Shot – 1 Tosheen
Race 2 – 6 ½ furlongs, Purse $22,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
1 Juansagain – Has shown plenty of improvement since a tardy beginning; was claimed by trainer Richard Baltas who knows a thing or two about improving a racehorse.
4 Inspired Wisdom – Draw a line thru his last turf race and his resume looks a lot better; chance to sit a trip and come flying on the wide out late.
Long Shot – 3 The Custodian
Race 3 – 6 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
7 Blue Anchor – The key for me is I like his maiden won two races back at Los Alamitos; disappointed as a beaten favorite in last but should offer more value here.
6 Cass in Stone – Tepid chalk in a wide open affair; Rafael Bejarano had options and chose to ride here for trainer Doug O’Neill, just needs to repeat his last race.
Long Shot – 2 Henry’s Holiday
Race 4 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $30,000, Claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 Sizzlin’ Joe – Ran Ok in last first off the claim by trainer Jack Carava; suspect there’s more left in the gass tank so he hires Rafael Bejarano for the money shot.
3 Anythingscookin – I like his chances because he could be lone early speed with these; if apprentice Ty Kennedy takes charge early, he could boss these around.
Long Shot – 8 You Know I Know
Race 5 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $21,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
7 Passionate Emotion – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; am concerned the drop happens in second career start, but he’s being real.
3 One Bye Two – Is reunited with jockey Tyler Baze who rode her to two strong seconds at Del Mar; this is a softer group so don’t be surprised if she goes all the way.
Long Shot – 2 Olotta Shaken
Race 6 – 5 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $52,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Caradini – Has been well bet in both career starts while not graduating; trainer Doug O’Neill tries turf tonight hoping to wake up the daughter of Bernardini.
6 Sturdy One – Showed surprising early speed flying down the hill in Arcadia last time out; fizzled out like a ripe rocket showing too much speed can kill.
Long Shot – 11 Explicable
Race 7 – 1 mile, Purse $53,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
5 Sweetrayofsunshine – Didn’t handle the turf as well as hoped for in last; returns to the main track where she has done a lot of damage, clearly the one to beat.
8 Cadet Roni – After a sharp win in an elongated sprint, stretches out today around 2-turns for trainer Mark Glatt; has good tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.
Long Shot – 10 Runaway Cherie
Race 8 – 6 ½ furlongs, Purse $18,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Warren’s Cracker – This race has the looks of falling apart late and a closer picking up the pieces; at 8/1 you know Fernando Perez will be flying fast late.
5 Ms. K J – Tepid chalk takes a serious drop in class for trainer Blaine Wright; Wright has done a fine job shipping in horses from his high percentage barn.
Long Shot – 7 My Silver Cat
Best Bet – 5 Sweetrayofsunshine (race 7)
Del Mar Thursday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/4/$20.40; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Del Mar Totals – 150/43/$240.20; Long Shots, 72/5/$50.60; Best Bets, 9/5/$15.40
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #3 Angelic Score (7/2) in race 3 at Churchill Downs. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Queen’s Parade ran third at Belmont Park paying $2.50 to show. Stats – 168/111/$830.10; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
