Race 1 – 1 mile, Purse $19,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up
1 Carlsbad Mountain – Was able to set soft fractions on the front end in last; cruised to victory over lesser foes, steps up and draws the advantageous rail.
3 Luckbox Sam – Sliding down the claiming ladder to this new career low class; has tactical speed to sit a trip and hopefully come grinding in the late stages.
Long Shot – 6 The Mad Hungarian
Race 2 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 18 feet), Purse $52,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
9 At Ease – Trainer Kenny Black has a small barn that I like keeping an eye on; for not much stock, he is doing some fine work, was the brother of jockey Corey Black.
4 Heat – His last two starts have been much better; has tactical speed and a good inside draw to sit a trip and come grinding along late.
Long Shot – 5 Ace Deuce
Race 3 – 1 mile, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
8 Dirt in Your Face – Has a difficult parking lot post, but has shown enough moxie to be a deserving morning line chalk; suspect will send early to gain good position.
1 Ghost of Navigator – If you’ve been reading me all these years, you know I like the rail post in a 2-turn mile turf or dirt; a strategic edge with short run to the turn.
Long Shot – 5 Travel Bound
Race 4 – 5 furlongs (turf, rail at 18 feet), Purse $55,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
7 Boozer – Has run at this turf sprint distance just once to no avail; key is he does love Del Mar sod and has an overall solid turf resume, like the cutback in distance.
Long Shot – 2 Tizcano
Race 5 – 1 mile, Purse $55,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
2 Rattataptap – She ran a big race last time out when a neck shy of victory; dead late closer has a better chance with these than in her difficult stakes starts.
5 Melanistic – Has a solid record of in the money finishes in one mile races on dirt; gets a new rider today in Santiago Gonzalez who is turning a lot of heads in SoCal.
Long Shot – 6 All Star Bub
Race 6 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 18 feet), Purse $52,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
6 Whispering Softly – Trainer Graham Motion has sent a handful of talented horses to SoCal; he obviously studied the condition book as so far all of them fit out here.
7 That’s a Lady – Ran like a green horse in career debut, slow early and fast late; John Sadler babies will improve with experience and the pedigree does point to turf.
Long Shot – 5 Deeds Not Words
Race 7 – 6 ½ furlongs, Purse $53,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Stealth Drone – Has been a productive claim for trainer Danny Velaquez; since he took her four races ago, she has a win, place and show, reunited with Rafael Bejarano.
5 Master the Blues – Chased the chalk to no avail last time out; came in second so it wouldn’t take a miracle to turn the tables if this mare is feeling stronger.
Long Shot – 4 Soul Flyer
Race 8 – 1 3/8th miles (turf, rail at 18 feet), $100,000 Red Carpet, Fillies andmares, 3-year-olds and up
11 Rusty Slipper – Chance for a trainer Graham Motion double on the card; Motion brings out Silvestre de Sousa, champion European jockey who is as good as it gets.
5 Trophee – Trainer Christophe Clement does not send many to the West Coast, but when he does look out; was not enamored with the West Coast turf division either.
Long Shot – 10 Personal Diary
Race 9 – 6 furlongs, Purse $29,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 Caminetto – HOF trainer Bob Baffert cull goes sliding down the claiming ladder to this new low class; fact is he wins with a lot of dropdowns, just not worth claiming.
7 Apollo Ten – Tepid chalk in a really wide open affair; if you are live in the Pick 6 and/or Pick 4 you should also probably use Newfound Gold who is a win machine.
Long Shot – 2 Hadfunlastnight
Best Bet – 3 Stealth Drone (race 7)
Del Mar Friday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/4/$22.20; Long Shots, 8/1/$11.80; Best Bet, 1/1/$4.20
