Horse Racing: Today at Los Alamitos, September 20

Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $18,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies, 3-year-olds
5 Private Terrace – Like the cutback in distance from elongated sprint to an abbreviated sprint; cozy outside post for a likely stalking trip.
1 Shallot – The rail has really gotten better so I don’t see a negative with this draw; despite a hard fought win in last, suspect she has a little more to give.
Long Shot – 4 Worthy Grapes
Race 2 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
1 Pretty Enuff – It only seems like Doug O’Neill and Mario Gutierrez have won everytime they have teamed up this meet; dropping in class from MSW to maiden claiming.
2 Pirate Flag – Of the many that have started already, her last race was the best looking of the bunch; she will need to improve a step, at least, to graduate tonight.
Long Shot – 5 Briana Jean
Race 3 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
8 Grape Fizz – Was well bet in last but was kind of her own worst enemy; should be a lot tighter for this start and like the parking lot post for a stalking trip.
7 Reinahermosa – Was a solid second in last despite going off at 79/1 odds; will be hoping for a wilting pace, at least for this level, to close into.
Long Shot – 3 Among the Angels
Race 4 – 6 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 Secret Command – Gave himself too much to do last time after a slow beginning; dead late closer has enough tactical speed where he should be able to sit midpack.
7 Finallygotabentley – If you like this horse, there is nothing wrong about using jockey Ry Eikleberry; he has won a lot of races over the years and can get it done.
Long Shot – 1 Overcomer
Race 5 – 6 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
11 Take It Easyplease – Won last time but was disqualified and placed second; cuts back in distance and faces a lot easier tonight, clearly the one to beat.
5 My Rose – FTS from trainer Philip D’Amato barn; morning line favorite due to the lack of talent in this field, so why not put the onus on an unraced horse.
Long Shot – 6 Alpha Doll
Race 6 – 1 mile, Purse $50,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
2 Perfect Set – The maestro Jerry Hollendorfer has clearly got his money’s worth since claimed this one 5 races ago; key for me is he makes sure to protect him.
6 Rocko’s Wheel – No shame chasing the shadow of Gimme Da Lute in the Real Good Deal; he won his lone start at Los Alamitos two races ago, extremely capable in this spot.
Long Shot – 3 Solid Wager
Race 7 – 6 furlongs, Purse $46,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
5 Exposure – Won her lone start at Los Alamitos for fun two races ago; has speed to lead or sit close to the early pace under Rafael Bejarano.
2 Sweetrayofsunshine – Disappointed in last after a sharp tally two races back; makes her first start at Los Alamitos, third start in her form cycle since returning.
Long Shot – 3 Winning Vision
Race 8 – 6 ½ furlongs, $100,000 Barretts Juvenile, 2-year-olds
8 Good for It – With 2-year-olds, am not concerned with picking a maiden facing winners; huge rider switch to Rafael Bejarano for the money shot.
2 Annie’s Candy – Faced the best in the division last time and got smoked; he faces much easier in this spot where his race two back in the Best Pal can beat these.
Long Shot – 6 Viviendo El Sueno
Race 9 – 1 mile, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 Ace Deuce – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; exits the turf where he has spent all of the last year racing over.
5 Rob’s Pal – Been away 15-months, but that may not matter with this motley crew; has a lot of fast back speed figures to run back to, if he is tight enough tonight.
Long Shot – 8 Feynman
Best Bet – 2 Perfect Set (race 6)
Los Alamitos Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/4/$22.20; Long Shots, 9/2/$23.40; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.60
Los Alamitos Totals – 115/30/$213.60; Long Shots, 57/13/$148.80; Best Bets, 7/4/$16.00
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #1 El Grande Rojo (4/1) in race 7 at Churchill Downs. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, Taghleeb ran out at Belmont Park. Stats – 141/94/$708.50; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
