One behind, ex-Rebel Scott might be good bet to win Masters

It’s nothing new for Adam Scott to be in position to win a major tournament on the final day. But the last time Scott had a shot to be a closer, he collapsed.

Scott, a former UNLV golfer, is one stroke off the lead going into today’s final round of the Masters. Angel Cabrera and Brandt Snedeker are tied atop the leaderboard at 7 under after 54 holes.

Snedeker is the new favorite, according to adjusted odds at the LVH sports book, at 7-4. Scott is the second choice at 7-2, followed by Cabrera (11-2), Tiger Woods (13-2), Jason Day (9-1), Matt Kuchar (12-1) and Marc Leishman (25-1).

In July, when closing in on his first major championship, Scott bogeyed four consecutive holes during a meltdown and finished second in the British Open. He has a second chance at Augusta, where he also finished second two years ago.

“Snedeker is tough. But if I had to place a wager on it based on the odds, I would take Scott,” LVH oddsmaker Jeff Sherman said. “I was questioning how he would play after his collapse in the British Open, but maybe he can take something from that, use it as a gainful experience and finish it off.”

Scott, who went into the Masters at 25-1 odds, narrowly missed several putts Saturday yet still fired a 3-under 69. Snedeker, 30-1 on Thursday, has been popular with bettors since he won at Pebble Beach in February.

Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson shot themselves out of contention the past two days. Woods was in jeopardy of being disqualified because of a rules violation.

Woods, the player with the most money behind him at the sports books, was at 9-5 odds after the second round.

“We took a ton of money on Tiger,” Sherman said. “They came in firing on him Friday night.”

But after a delayed review of an illegal drop Woods took on the 15th hole Friday, he was tagged with a two-stroke penalty before Saturday’s round, and the LVH adjusted his odds to 5-1. Instead of being left empty-handed, bettors holding tickets on Woods still have a shot.
