Cruiserweight Andrew Tabiti ready for next chapter of his career

As Andrew Tabiti made his way into the UNLV boxing club’s gym for his workout Wednesday, he was being tailed by a videographer who was capturing his every move.

Bear in mind the 26-year-old undefeated cruiserweight from Las Vegas has fought only 12 times professionally. So to warrant that kind of attention is a bit strange.

But if Tabiti continues to win, he’ll have more than video guys trailing him. He probably will want to surround himself with some of those beefy bodyguards who have had Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s back for years.

Tabiti (12-0, 11 knockouts) is starting to get bigger fights and garner more attention. On Friday, he’ll meet Keith Tapia (17-0, 11 KOs) in a 10-round fight on Showtime’s SHOBox series from Sam’s Town.

“It’s been a wonderful experience,” he said. “I’m a little surprised how far I’ve come so quickly. It’s a little overwhelming at times when I think about it.”

Tabiti turned pro in July 2013 and used his physical talent and strength to overwhelm his opponents. He scored knockouts in each of his first 10 fights, all the while trying to learn how to box as a professional.

But being promoted by Mayweather Promotions, he has quickly learned the nuances that make for a champion boxer.

He has learned to set up his opponents with his jab and sharp combinations. He has become a much better defensive fighter. He moves around the ring much smoother and more economically.

It’s little wonder Mayweather believes Tabiti will be a world champion. He often has said Tabiti has the ability to get to the top.

“When someone like Floyd says those things about you, it motivates you to work even harder,” Tabiti said. “I know nothing is handed to you in boxing. You’ve got to work for it and earn it.”

Tapia, 25, could get a career boost with a victory.

“He’s a solid competitor,” Tabiti said. “I need to fight better opponents if I’m going to fight for a title someday. This fight is the next chapter of my career.”

The first bell for the card is scheduled for 6 p.m.
