Veteran promoter Roy Englebrecht barred from doing business in Nevada

Has Roy Englebrecht promoted his last fight in Las Vegas?

The longtime boxing promoter from Southern California was suspended for 18 months Wednesday by the Nevada Athletic Commission for turning in falsified documents and misleading the commission. Englebrecht filled out and signed boxer Zab Judah’s license form prior to Judah’s scheduled March 12 fight at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center.

Englebrecht, 71, admitted his wrongdoing to the commission, saying: “I made a mistake. I wasn’t trying to deceive anyone. It was poor judgment on my part.”

The card was canceled by NAC executive director Bob Bennett after he suspended Judah for falsifying information on his license form regarding a lien for back child support in New York State. Judah claimed he had no such liens with the courts in New York but that state’s Department of Child Services claimed Judah owed more than $270,000 in child support. Judah remains suspended pending his own disciplinary hearing next month.

NAC chairman Anthony Marnell III said during the deliberation of the commissioners, “Someone was selling something and someone was buying something and none of it was approved by this commission.”

In addition to the suspension, Englebrecht was ordered to pay all the fighters scheduled to compete on that card, with the exception of Judah, 100 percent of their purse as well as reimburse the production company. He also will be required to reimburse the state for its attorney fees and should he attempt to renew his promoter’s license in Nevada, any event he is involved with will be closely vetted by the NAC.

MAGDALENO DISPUTE

Las Vegas lightweight Diego Magdaleno has asked the NAC to mediate a dispute between himself and his manager, Frank Espinoza.

Magdaleno, 29, who last fought in October 10 when he was knocked out by WBO champion Terry Flanagan, has not fought since. He claims Espinoza has not worked on his behalf to get him back in the ring and he would like to be released from his contract, which has one year remaining.

Espinoza told the commission by phone that he had fights lined up for Magdaleno but Magdaleno (28-2, 12 knockouts) turned them down.

Commissioner Pat Lundvall will hear the dispute and rule on it sometime next month.

JACK SOUNDS OFF

WBC super middleweight champ Badou Jack was not happy to hear the news Thursday that Lucian Bute tested positive for a banned substance following their April 30 fight in Washington, D.C. which ended in a 12-round draw.

Bute tested positive for Ostarine which increases stamina and recovery ability.

“He’s still couldn’t beat me even using something,” Jack, who lives and trains in Las Vegas, told ESPN.com. “I won the fight. Everybody thought I won the fight. It should not have been a draw in the first place. Hopefully it could be changed to a win.

“It’s cheating. This is the hurt business. You can die in the ring. It’s bad. I like (Bute) as a person. He’s a nice guy, but that’s not cool at all. You put your life on the line every time you step in the ring and your opponent is cheating? You can die.”

Bute said: “I am surprised and sorry about this. I have passed every test that I was asked to take since I won a world title. I don’t understand what led to this positive result. There will be an analysis of the B sample and I am sure this result will be negative.”
