Burton’s 3 saves UNR win streak

RENO -- Deonte Burton made a fall-away 3-pointer with 11.2 seconds left and UNR rallied to beat Utah State 53-52 on Thursday, tying a program record with its 16th consecutive victory.

Malik Story scored 18 points and Burton finished with 13 for the Wolf Pack (19-3, 8-0 Western Athletic).

The 16-game winning streak ties the 1965-66 UNR team for the longest in school history.

Preston Medlin scored 15 points and Brockeith Pane 12 for Utah State (12-11, 4-4).

Utah State had taken a 52-50 lead on a layup by Pane with 2:07 remaining and stayed ahead until the final seconds. Devonte Elliott blocked a mid-range jumper by Ben Clifford with 27 seconds left to give the Wolf Pack its winning possession.

Burton was falling to his knees as the 3-pointer went in.

Utah State had a final attempt, but Elliott blocked Morgan Grim's layup attempt with 1.4 seconds left.

■ Brigham Young 83, No. 24 Gonzaga 73 -- At Provo, Utah, Noah Hartsock compiled 24 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Cougars to a West Coast Conference upset of the 24th-ranked Bulldogs.

Matt Carlino added 18 points and five assists for Brigham Young (19-6, 7-3 WCC) and Brandon Davies scored 15. Anson Winder got his first start and had 10 points, five assists and three steals.

Sam Dower came off the bench to score 15 points for Gonzaga (17-4, 7-2). Gary Bell Jr. added 14 points, Marquise Carter had 13 and Robert Sacre 11.

The Cougars, who made 12 steals in the first half, led 38-24 at the break. BYU stretched the lead to 55-36 with 13:30 to go before the Bulldogs trimmed it to nine in the final two minutes.

Gonzaga made only 3 of 19 shots from 3-point range, and BYU wasn't much better at 3 of 12. The Cougars outscored Gonzaga 44-36 in the paint and had 22 points off 19 turnovers.
