Cabrera deal in perspective

There is a famous story about a brilliant response Babe Ruth gave when asked his feelings on making a higher salary than President Herbert Hoover.

“What the hell has Hoover got to do with it? Besides, I had a better year than he did,” Ruth is famously quoted as saying.

The exact words have been cited in several different ways, but the general sentiment always holds. Ruth was at the top of his game and was being justly compensated.

Which brings us to the contract Miguel Cabrera agreed to with the Detroit Tigers on Thursday.

Cabrera, the most dominant offensive player in baseball over the last five years, will reportedly make $292 million over the next 10 years.

ESPN business reporter Darren Rovell put that number into interesting perspective with this Twitter post: “Miguel Cabrera will earn $49,423 PER AT BAT over the next decade. Median annual income of a household in Michigan: $48,471.”

Incredible.

Cabrera is an amazing talent and worth every penny. Still, $292 million is a lot of money.

He must have Dave Rice’s agent.
