Colts hang ‘2014 AFC Finalist’ banner in stadium — PHOTO

Most NFL teams wouldn’t want a constant reminder of the time they were blown out by 38 points in the AFC Championship game. The Indianapolis Colts aren’t most NFL teams.

In fact, in the eyes of the Colts, last season — which ended with a 45-7 loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC title game — was a banner year. Literally.

In arguably the most embarassing banner in sports, the Colts have hung a “2014 AFC Finalist” banner at Lucas Oil Stadium.

We don’t know why they didn’t also put “45-7” on the banner to ensure no Indianapolis fan will ever forget that proud day in franchise history.

The Colts might as well put up a participation ribbon. Everybody gets a trophy! Yay!

Not surprisingly, a photo of the banner posted on Twitter on Wednesday ignited widespread ridicule.

Perhaps the saddest part of the story is that Indianapolis has had this loser’s mentality since 1995, when it proudly hoisted its first “AFC Finalist” banner to mark its thrilling loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC title game. The Colts also hung an “AFC Finalist” banner from 2003, when they also almost advanced to the Super Bowl but fell short in a loss to the Patriots.
