Davis fans 15 in four-hitter, fuels Round Mountain

RENO - Emitt Davis couldn't contain his smile, with good reason.

The junior right-hander struck out 15 and pitched a four-hitter as Round Mountain defeated Virginia City 3-1 in the Class 1A state tournament at UNR's Peccole Park on Thursday.

"I've never been to state, so this is my favorite feeling for baseball right now," Davis said. "It's amazing."

So was Davis. After allowing a run on a wild pitch in the first inning, he struck out eight over the next three innings. Davis finished with one walk.

The Knights (14-10) play Pahranagat Valley (14-9) at 10 a.m. today at Bishop Manogue. Virginia City (16-11-1) plays Carlin (18-8) in an elimination game at 1 p.m. at Manogue. The winner of that game plays the loser of the Pahranagat-Round Mountain game at 4 p.m.

Serjio Chavez was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Round Mountain, which stranded 10 runners.

■ Pahranagat Valley 10, Carlin 3 - At UNR, senior right-hander Kade Wadsworth allowed two earned runs on five hits and struck out 14 for the Panthers.

Wadsworth retired the first 11 batters he faced, eight by strikeout.

Pahranagat Valley freshman Paden Higbee went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

CLASS 3A

■ Truckee 13, Moapa Valley 5 - At Damonte Ranch, Andy McKechnie smacked three doubles as part of the Wolverines' 16-hit attack that overwhelmed the Pirates in a 3A state tournament opener.

Jake Repp, Dylan Mortensen and Jared Repp each had a double for Moapa Valley (10-20), which will play Elko (21-9) at UNR at 8 a.m. today..

CLASS 2A

■ Pershing County 6, The Meadows 3 - At Lovelock, Pershing County (23-11) used a grand slam in the fifth inning to break open a 2-2 game and coast to victory.

Justin Diamond had two RBIs and Garrett Gosse added an RBI double for The Meadows (22-8), which faces Needles (21-8) in an elimination game at 10 a.m. today at Lovelock.

■ Yerington 6, Needles 2 - At Lovelock, winning pitcher Michael Garner had five strikeouts and also smacked a double as the Lions (27-5-1) downed the Mustangs.
