Ex-Bonanza star Bryant hits walk-off homer in 12th to lift Iowa past 51s
Kris Bryant’s two-run homer in the 12th inning gave the Iowa Cubs a 6-5 Pacific Coast League win over the 51s on Thursday night in Des Moines, Iowa.
Matt Reynolds’ two-out solo home run in the top of the 12th gave Las Vegas a 5-4 lead. Reynolds had tied the score 4-4 with a leadoff homer in the eighth.
But 51s reliever Chase Bradford, a Silverado High School graduate, couldn’t hold the lead. Logan Watkins led off the bottom of the 12th with an infield single. Bryant, a former Bonanza star, then drove a fastball from Bradford over the center-field fence.
The four-game series concludes at 5:05 p.m. Friday.
Before Thursday’s game, the 51s announced that veteran outfielder Bobby Abreu had been assigned to Las Vegas after signing a minor league contract with the New York Mets.
Abreu, 40, started the season with the 51s and appeared in 15 games, hitting .395 with four doubles, one home run and nine RBIs before being promoted to the Mets on April 21. He played in 67 games for the Mets and hit .238 before being designated for assignment Aug. 5.
