Faith Lutheran girls slip by Virgin Valley

MESQUITE — After playing 65 minutes of gritty defense, Virgin Valley looked as if it might pull off one of the biggest girls soccer upsets in the state this season.

Instead, the Bulldogs left the Mesquite Sports Complex on Friday in season-ending tears.

Junior midfielder Hannah Stevens scored in the 66th minute to spark top-seeded Faith Lutheran to a 2-0 win over play-in game winner Virgin Valley in a Class 3A Southern League semifinal match.

The Crusaders (15-0) clinched a trip to the state tournament. They’ll play third-seeded Pahrump Valley at 11 a.m. today in the league tournament final.

“Nobody in the area except for our girls gave us a chance in that game,” Virgin Valley coach Terry Ogden said.

Maddy Courvoisier scored in the 75th minute to give the Crusaders a 2-0 lead. Sydney Spoon assisted on both goals.

Marissa Fehrman had two saves in the shutout. Jacque Olive had eight saves for the Bulldogs (7-11-5).

Pahrump Valley 1, Boulder City 0 — The third-seeded Trojans upset the second-seeded Eagles to clinch a trip to state.

Samantha Sposato scored in the first half for Pahrump Valley (7-8-2), which got a nine-save shutout from goalkeeper Haley Williams.

Boulder City finished 9-4-2.

BOYS

Boulder City 2, White Pine 1 — Trevor Montgomery scored 13 minutes into the second overtime to send the Eagles to state.

The sophomore forward scored twice for second-seeded Boulder City (8-5-2), which faces No. 1 seed Faith Lutheran at 9 a.m. today.

Tony Gomez scored for White Pine (9-6-3).

Faith Lutheran 8, The Meadows 0 — Ryan Sniezyk scored five goals to help the Crusaders clinch a trip to state.

Chris Ortwein, Terry Unruh and Wade Norman added goals for Faith Lutheran (14-0-1).

Marc Davies had five saves in the shutout.

The Meadows finished 7-8.
