Faith Lutheran girls slip by Virgin Valley

MESQUITE — After playing 65 minutes of gritty defense, Virgin Valley looked as if it might pull off one of the biggest girls soccer upsets in the state this season.

Instead, the Bulldogs left the Mesquite Sports Complex on Friday in season-ending tears.

Junior midfielder Hannah Stevens scored in the 66th minute to spark top-seeded Faith Lutheran to a 2-0 win over play-in game winner Virgin Valley in a Class 3A Southern League semifinal match.

The Crusaders (15-0) clinched a trip to the state tournament. They’ll play third-seeded Pahrump Valley at 11 a.m. today in the league tournament final.

“Nobody in the area except for our girls gave us a chance in that game,” Virgin Valley coach Terry Ogden said.
