Gaels’ Winder heats up

Bishop Gorman High School guard Anson Winder came into the StarVision Sports Center Stage Tournament with a green light to shoot the ball.

And the senior-to-be could be rising on the recruiting radar because of it.

Winder had 34 points and 12 rebounds Saturday to lead Las Vegas' Triple Double Elite to a 63-55 win over the Houston Celtics in a 17U Platinum Bracket first-round game at Spring Valley.

Later, he scored 19 in a 71-55 second-round loss to Mustang Ballers (Ohio) at Spring Valley.

The 6-foot-3-inch combo guard recently received a scholarship offer from Idaho, and he has received interest from Brigham Young, UNR, Portland and UC Riverside.

"We came in just trying to play hard," Winder said. "Coach gave me the green light, so you've got to take it and do what you've got to do to get a win."

Triple Double Elite coach Tyrell Jamerson, a former UNLV guard, said Winder's "basketball body with the athleticism" appeals to colleges.

"Around the city, a lot of people sleep on Anson," Jamerson said. "If he's not top three in the city, I need to retire, because I'm losing my eyesight."

Palo Verde's Andrew Topham had eight points and 10 rebounds in the first game for Triple Double Elite, which was 3-0 in pool play and 4-1 overall at the tournament.

• ADIDAS SUPER 64 -- The Las Vegas Prospects were eliminated from the Championship Bracket with a 57-51 Sweet 16 loss to Minnesota Pump N Run at Rancho.

Spring Valley senior-to-be Justin Omogun, a forward, scored 11 points for the Prospects.

"In a tournament like this, you're playing against the top kids in the country," said Omogun, who has a scholarship offer from Montana State. "We took a lot of positives from this game. All your attributes increase playing in a tournament like this."

Las Vegas Dogcatchers Elite was ousted from the Championship Bracket in a 71-61 second-round loss to KC Pump N Run (Mo.) at Rancho.

Palo Verde's Davion Pearson and Cheyenne's Victor Bermudez scored eight points each for Dogcatchers Elite.

In the 15s Division Bracket, Gorman's Shabazz Muhammad scored 33 points to carry Dream Vision (Calif.) to a 78-65 win over D1E Derrick Rose All-Stars (Ill.) at Del Sol.

Dream Vision was later eliminated with a 67-62 Sweet 16 loss to PA Playaz (Pa.) at Las Vegas.

• THE MAIN EVENT -- Henderson's Mad Moves Inc. was eliminated in a 76-65 Gold Championship first-round setback to Indy Magic (Ind.) at Legacy.

Coronado's Brandon Glanz had 21 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks to lead Mad Moves, which also got 21 points from Silverado's James Lata.

• REEBOK SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS -- Centennial's Ben Vozzola scored 21 points to lift Branch West Prep (Calif.) to a 60-49 win over Colorado Springs Flight at Coronado. Later, he scored 15 in a 63-52 win over Positive Image White (Pa.) at Coronado.

Palo Verde's Moses Morgan scored 28 points to lead I Can All Stars (Calif.) to a 76-63 victory over Houston Elite at Foothill.

Findlay Prep's Godwin Okonji had 20 points to lift Belmont Shore (Calif.) to a 57-47 win over the North Texas Cowboys at Coronado.

• TITLE GAMES -- Multiple championships in all four tournaments will be contested today.

In the adidas Super 64 at Rancho, title games are scheduled in the Championship Bracket (7:40 p.m.), 17s Gold Bracket (6:20 p.m.), 16s Division Bracket (5 p.m.) 15s Division Bracket (5 p.m.) and 14s Division Bracket (3:40 p.m.).

In the Reebok Summer Championships at Foothill, championships are slated for the Open "A" Championship (6 p.m.) and Gatorade/Baller Circuit "B" Championship (4:30 p.m.).

In VisionSports' The Main Event, the 17U Platinum Championship is scheduled for 1:25 p.m. at Canyon Springs; the 16U Platinum Championship is at 2:30 p.m. at Legacy; and the 15U Platinum Championship is at 2:30 p.m. at Sierra Vista.

In StarVision Sports' Center Stage Tournament, finals are set in the 17U Platinum Bracket (3 p.m. at Spring Valley), 16U Platinum Bracket (3 p.m. at UNLV) and 15U Platinum Bracket (11 a.m. at Western).
