Gaudin, two relievers combine on four-hitter as 51s blank Bees

Chad Gaudin pitched six innings and combined with two relievers on a four-hitter as the 51s shut out the Salt Lake Bees 3-0 on Thursday in a Pacific Coast League game at Salt Lake City.

Gaudin (2-1) struck out three and walked none. He allowed all four hits, but two baserunners were erased on double plays. The 28-year-old has a 27-27 major league record with six teams and was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays on Aug. 5, two weeks after being released by the Washington Nationals.

Kyle Davies threw two spotless innings, striking out three, and Danny Farquhar finished for his 12th save, fanning two.

The 51s (65-68) scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and ninth innings. Adeiny Hechavarria led off with a triple and scored on David Cooper’s sacrifice fly in the fourth. Ricardo Nanita singled, stole second and scored on Ryan Budde’s single in the fifth. In the ninth, Jayson Nix greeted reliever Ryan Brasier with a double, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Adam Loewen’s sacrifice fly.

Matt Palmer (7-11) took the loss for Salt Lake (59-74). He allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings, struck out three and walked none.

The teams play again at 5:35 p.m. today in the third game of a five-game series.
