Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Jan. 3
January 2, 2014 - 9:52 pm
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 mile, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds
2 Artemis - Well bet, sharp second in last; reunited with Rafael Bejarano for the money shot.
5 Abide in Me - Odd race in last opening up 12-length lead for no reason; filly must be a run off, Joe Talamo knows better.
Long Shot - 4 Lady Bugatti
Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $60,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up
1 Roman Threat - Huge class relief from the grade 1 Santa Anita Sprint for this; speed and the rail, dangerous combination.
3 Let’s Get Crackin - Logical chalk has shown steady improvement since claimed by Bill Spawr; flattered by Secret Circle in BC.
Long Shot - 2 Wild Dude
Race 3 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $45,000, Claiming $50,000, 4-year-olds and up
3 Stoney Fleece - Reclaimed by John Sadler, one of the best trainer angles in racing; Corey Nakatani is riding in top form.
6 Maybe Tuesday - Jeff Mullins barn has opened up fast this meet; this horse owns 2 wins at Santa Anita.
Long Shot - 2 Vibratio Jazz
Race 4 - 1 mile, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
1 Lake Maracaibo - Some horseplayers, like me, are forgiving handicappers; taking the biggest class drop in racing.
6 Just Dancing - Sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to the bottom; John Shirreffs puts up a red flag for sale sign.
Long Shot - 2 Sugar High Kaylin
Race 5 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $25,000, Claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
1 Copper Bay - Looks like a good spot for Tyler Baze to get his comeback win; can save all the ground from the rail post.
5 Ransom Canyon - Well bet in two losses at this class level; like most in here, is camera shy at the wire.
Long Shot - 2 Meringue Pie
Race 6 - 6 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds
2 Tosheen - Tiny edge in the hardest race on the card; has won two straight but does not look like any world beater.
6 Happy Idea - May be able to carve out a stalking trip; there are multiple speeds in here, Rafael Bejarano likes to wait.
Long Shot - 3 Oneandonlyloveman
Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $60,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
6 Miss Lucky Sevens - Her one try down the hill was a good one; the more outside the post, the better down the hillside course.
9 Blues and Silvers - Parking lot post for this hillside try; Gary Stevens doesn’t ride many, but he makes them count.
Long Shot - 2 Birdlover
Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 3-year-olds
5 Fulmerized - Sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to this class; may be in front in a no passing zone field.
10 Sams Blue Cat - Figures to sit a trip and try to power home late; can clock the speed from the outside.
Long Shot - 9 Johns Journey
Best Bet - 2 Artemis (race 1)
Santa Anita Park Thursday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/7/$45.20; Long Shots, 7/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Park Totals - 98/35/$222.20; Long Shots, 50/4/$53.80; Best Bets, 5/3/$10.60
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #4 Lion Warrior (7/2) in race 3 at Fair Grounds. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Maxine’s Pride ran out at Laurel Park. Stats - 5/3/$15.30; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
