McIlroy nets $2 million
for Shanghai victory

U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy won $2 million in the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, beating Anthony Kim with a par on the first hole of a playoff.

McIlroy holed a 2-foot putt for the victory after Kim missed a 3-footer.

McIlroy had a chance to win in regulation, but the 22-year-old star from Northern Ireland missed an 8-foot birdie putt. He closed with an even-par 72 to match Kim (69) at 18-under 270 on Lake Malaren's Jack Nicklaus-designed Masters course.

Also: Bo Van Pelt ran away with the Asia Pacific Classic in Selangork, Malaysia, birdieing five of the last eight holes for a 7-under 64 and a six-stroke victory.

Van Pelt finished at 23-under 261 and earned $1.3 million in the second-year event sanctioned by the PGA and Asian tours.

Sergio Garcia held off fellow Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez by a stroke in the Andalucia Masters in Sotogrande, Spain, for his second straight European PGA Tour victory.

Garcia shot even-par 71 for a 6-under 278 total.

Ken Duke won the season-ending Nationwide Tour Championship, and two-time heart transplant recipient Erik Compton earned a PGA Tour card when he finished in the top 25 on the season money list.

Duke closed with a 4-under 68 to finish at 10-under 278 to jump from 36th to seventh on the money list. Compton, who tied for 18th, finished 13th on the money list.

Kvitova tops Azarenka
in WTA Championships

Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova won her first WTA Championships title, beating Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in Istanbul for a victory that will also put her at No. 2 in the world rankings.

Kvitova has won six titles this year, the same number as No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki.

Also: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga rallied from a set and a break down to beat Juan Martin Del Potro 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 in the Erste Bank Open final in Vienna.

Marin Cilic won his first title of the season and sixth of his career, beating Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the final of the St. Petersburg Open in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Derek Thorn of Bakersfield, Calif., won the 154-lap season-finale in the SRL Southwest Tour regional stock car race Saturday night at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Bullring, and Jim Petitt II of Prunedale, Calif., placed fourth to win his second series championship.

Winners in the Legend Cars Nationals were: Ira Laughy (Legends Masters); Kyle Weatherman (Legends Pro); Alex Pacheco (Legends Semi Pro); Josh Morris (Legends Young Lions); James Edsall (Thunder Cars); and Troy Wesolowski (Bandoleros).

Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won the inaugural Formula One Indian Grand Prix in New Delhi. Vettel has 11 wins this season, and victories in the final two races would equal Michael Schumacher's record of 13 wins.

Wilson Kipsang of Kenya ran the second-fastest marathon, winning in Frankfurt, Germany, in 2 hours, 3 minutes, 42 seconds, four seconds off fellow Kenyan Patrick Makau's world-record time a month ago in Berlin.

The UNLV men's soccer team gave up a goal 27 seconds into the game and lost to Sacramento State 2-0 at Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels (3-13, 2-7 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) outshot the Hornets, 14-10.

Kansas basketball players Tyshawn Taylor and Elijah Johnson, both guards, were suspended for violating team rules during the offseason. Taylor and Johnson will miss both of the No. 13 Jayhawks' exhibition games.
