Rice says he's disappointed in
Stanback but will support him

UNLV basketball coach Dave Rice issued a statement Thursday in reaction to Chace Stanback's arrest on a driving under the influence charge.

Stanback, who will be a senior next season, is the Rebels' top returning scorer and rebounder. He was stopped by Las Vegas police May 13 and booked into the Clark County Detention Center.

"I take this situation with Chace Stanback very seriously. I am disappointed with the bad decision that he made last week, but I will support and help him through the process," Rice said in the statement.

"Chace and I have met several times and he has consistently expressed regret. He is a valued member of our team, but he has a very clear understanding of what is expected from each individual in this program and that his actions were unacceptable. The process is ongoing, and when it is complete, we will have further comment regarding a resolution."

According to a police spokesman, results of Stanback's blood test will be known in approximately 10 days. He is scheduled to appear in Justice Court on Aug. 11.

Southern California fired a 10-under 278 to take a nine-stroke lead over UCLA and Texas at The Farms Golf Club. The top five teams in the 54-hole regional will qualify for the national championships May 31 to June 5 in Stillwater, Okla.

Rebels junior Derek Ernst had five birdies and finished with a 3-under 69, putting him in a three-way tie for fourth. USC's Jeffrey Kang shot a 6-under 66 and has a two-stroke lead over two golfers.

Sophomore Kevin Penner (72) and freshmen Blake Biddle (74) and Nicholas Maruri (80) completed UNLV's scoring. Junior Colby Smith's 87 didn't count in the team score.

Scott Dysinger singled home Richie Jimenez with one out in the ninth inning to give UNLV a 4-3 baseball victory over San Diego State at Wilson Stadium.

Jimenez led off with a walk and went to second on Scott Berke's sacrifice bunt. Trevor Kirk then was intentionally walked, bringing up Dysinger.

Kirk and Dysinger each had two hits for the Rebels (33-21, 10-11 Mountain West Conference), and Ryan Scott drove in two runs.

Zack Hartman (5-2) pitched the ninth and got the victory despite allowing the tying run on three hits and a walk. The Aztecs fell to 19-34 and 9-13.

Toms rebounds with 62, shares
lead with Reavie at Colonial

Four days after losing in a playoff at The Players Championship, David Toms shot a bogey-free, 8-under-par 62 to share the first-round lead with Chez Reavie in the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas.

After forcing a playoff with K.J. Choi at TPC Sawgrass with a rare birdie at the 18th hole, Toms missed a short par putt at the famed No. 17 island hole in the playoff that would have extended play.

At Hogan's Alley, Toms had his best score in 429 rounds -- since a career-best 61 at the Sony Open in Hawaii in January 2006. That was the last of his 12 PGA Tour victories.

Reavie topped his career-best score by two strokes. The 62s matched the lowest 18-hole scores on the PGA Tour this season and were the best for a first round.

Also: Norway's Suzann Pettersen, ranked third in the world, won three of the final four holes to beat Lake Las Vegas resident Natalie Gulbis 1 up in the first round of the Sybase Match Play Championship in Gladstone, N.J.

Pettersen, seeded fifth, was conceded a birdie on No. 18 after sticking an approach shot on the par 5 from 50 yards. Gulbis, seeded 49th and playing on a sponsor's exemption, missed a 12-footer to extend the match.

Nine of the top 11 seeds advanced, including No. 1 Na Yeon Choi, No. 9 Michelle Wie and No. 11 Inbee Park, who played at Bishop Gorman High School. Second-seeded Jiyai Shin and No. 8 Song-Hee Kim were eliminated.

No. 1-ranked Lee Westwood, No. 2 Luke Donald and No. 3 Martin Kaymer posted victories on the first day of the World Match Play Championship in Casares, Spain. Westwood defeated Anders Hansen 6 and 5, Donald eliminated former UNLV star Ryan Moore 4 and 3, and Kaymer edged Y.E. Yang, 2 and 1.

Hamlin pit crew nips Johnson's,
retains title in Sprint Cup event

Denny Hamlin's No. 11 team retained its title in NASCAR's Pit Crew Challenge in Charlotte, N.C., edging Jimmie Johnson's No. 48 team in the final round.

Hamlin's seven-member team changed four tires, put in gas and pushed the car 40 yards in 22.298 seconds without collecting a penalty to earn $70,675. The crew now gets to select its pit stall Saturday for the All-Star race.

The event included the top 24 crews in the Sprint Cup standings. Kurt Busch's crew upset top-seeded Kyle Busch's in the second round.

Also: Australian Will Power turned a lap at 227.778 mph to lead practice times for the Indianapolis 500. Swiss driver Simona De Silvestro crashed early in the session and sustained burns to both hands. She was released from a hospital, and her status for Saturday's qualifying is uncertain.

ESPN book covers network's
history, after-hours escapades

A new book about ESPN mixes a detailed corporate history of the 24-hour-a-day sports network with off-camera gossip and after-hours tales about the personalities.

Called "Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN," the book is due for publication Tuesday, but some copies were distributed Thursday. Well over 700 pages, the tome is an oral history, with co-authors James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales saying in the introduction that they interviewed more than 550 people.

Chris Berman, Keith Olbermann, Bob Ley and other on-camera stars join network executives including founding chairman Bill Rasmussen, who initially incorporated his company as the ESP Network in 1978, in chronicling the rise of "the worldwide leader in sports."

The interviews are published, according to the authors, with minimal editing and provide in-depth looks at many of the key moments that helped propel the network to an international behemoth. Along with the achievements and setbacks, readers get a look at the infighting, camaraderie, creativity and self-congratulation. Miller and Shales say "(at ESPN) partying is a varsity spot."

Also: Police were investigating whether drugs had a role in the death Thursday of Oklahoma senior linebacker Austin Box, and a witness told authorities he thought his friend had overdosed.

Authorities in Norman, Okla., didn't immediately release an official cause of death, and Box's body was sent to the state Medical Examiner's office.

Box, 22, started the final five games last season.

Colorado State basketball coach Tim Miles signed a contract extension that will keep him at the school through 2016. The deal will include a graduated salary that will increase to $750,000 annually beginning in 2012-13, with another $585,000 that will go into effect July 1.

UCLA shot a 7-over-par 295 to take a three-stroke lead over defending champion Purdue after the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship in Bryan, Texas. The Bruins are at 8-over 584. Louisiana State's Austin Ernst shot a 6-under 66 to grab a three-shot individual lead at 6-under 138.
