Kim ‘loose cannon’ … or not?

Is PGA Tour player Anthony Kim golf’s “current John Daly,” as Australian Robert Allenby said Sunday, or were his comments “taken out of context,” as Allenby claimed Wednesday?

You be the judge.

After Kim routed Allenby 5 and 3 on Sunday to help the United States beat the International team 191/2-141/2 in the Presidents Cup, Allenby said his friends saw Kim getting back to the team hotel “sideways” at 4 in the morning, less than five hours before their match.

“Maybe we should all take the theory of Anthony Kim,” Allenby told Golfweek. “Get home at 4 (a.m.) and then go shoot 6 under.”

Asked if his comments were on the record, Allenby said: “I don’t care. Ask his playing partners. Ask his team. He is the loosest cannon in that team.”

When informed of Allenby’s comments, Kim, 24, said the reports were “absolutely false.” He said he’d joined the U.S. team for dinner Saturday evening and hung out with friends for 20 minutes before going “straight to my room.”

“I’m actually pretty surprised that he said that. I was in tip-top shape coming into today,” said Kim, who played with Justin Timberlake on Wednesday at TPC Summerlin in the Championship Pro-Am of Timberlake’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Allenby also said: “I’m just pissed off that I lost to him. Maybe I should have gone out with him,” to which Kim, who went 3-1 in the Presidents Cup, replied, “If Robert had that to say, he may need to go practice a little bit more.”

U.S. team captain Fred Couples said Wednesday that Kim was “crushed” by Allenby’s comments, then defended him, telling Seattle radio station KJR-AM (950), “I promise you, there’s no way you can go out and beat a guy like Robert Allenby 5 and 3 if you’re out until 4 in the morning.

“I can promise you that he was not out any night, let alone Saturday night.”

On Wednesday, both players released statements through the PGA Tour. Although Allenby claimed “the comments published were taken out of context,” he “did call Anthony to apologize” and Kim “accepted his apology.”

WHO’S ON THE TEE, TIMBERLAKE? — During an appearance on the “Jay Leno Show” this week, Timberlake was asked if he could name 10 PGA Tour players in 15 seconds. The singer stumbled a couple of times before barely beating the clock.

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Anthony Kim, Jim Furyk, Camilo Villegas … uh, uh … Kenny Perry, Hunter Mahan, Nick Watney, Steve Stricker … uh, uh … Y.E. Yang, fool!”

CAL FOOTBALL CUTS COSTS — In an effort to help cut costs at the University of California, the Bears football team will take a bus, instead of a chartered flight, to Saturday’s game at UCLA.

In a similar attempt at the University of Southern California, the Trojans football team reportedly has slashed player salaries this season from seven figures to six.
