Lincoln County’s Walker player of year in 2A

Lincoln County senior point guard Dantley Walker has been named Player of the Year in Class 2A Southern League boys basketball.

Walker, who plans to sign with UNLV in April before leaving on a two-year Mormon mission in August, became the state's all-time leader in points (3,304) and assists (887) this season.

Walker, who averaged 36.2 points and 10.3 assists as a senior, carried the Lynx (24-7) to the league semifinals.

Laughlin's Pat Woodburn, who led the Cougars to an 11-11 record in their first year in 2A, was named Coach of the Year.

In 2A girls basketball, Needles senior forward Gena Chavira took Player of the Year, and Lincoln County's Matt Cameron was named Coach of the Year.

■ 1A HONORS -- In Class 1A Southern League boys basketball, Pahranagat Valley swept the top awards, with senior point guard Cody Hosier named Most Valuable Player and Brian Higbee named Coach of the Year.

■ SOCCER AWARD -- Palo Verde senior midfielder Matt Polster has been named the Gatorade Nevada Boys Soccer Player of the Year, an award that recognizes athletic and academic excellence.

Polster scored 10 goals to help the Panthers (13-2-3) reach the Sunset Region semifinals.

■ BASEBALL POLLS -- Baseball season doesn't begin until March 10, but two local teams already are nationally ranked.

Rancho is ranked No. 7 and Bishop Gorman No. 15 in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's Easton Sports National Poll.
