Local colleges roundup: UNLV baseball winning streak ends, 3-2

Josh Melendez doubled home Logan Lippert in the top of the 10th inning to give New Mexico a 3-2 victory over the No. 21 UNLV baseball team on Friday at Wilson Stadium in the Mountain West opener, snapping the Rebels’ 10-game winning streak.

UNLV (14-4, 0-1) took a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning when Erik VanMeetren reached and scored on errors. New Mexico (7-9, 1-0) answered in the eighth with Melendez’s RBI single.

UNLV’s Erick Fedde allowed two runs on five hits in eight innings with six strikeouts and four walks. Kenny Oakley (1-2) took the loss in relief.

The teams continue the series at 12:05 p.m. today.

■ SOFTBALL — Amanda Oliveto and Francesca Foti each pitched complete-game shutouts to give UNLV (10-16) a sweep of the day’s games at the San Diego Classic II in Santee, Calif.

Oliveto allowed two hits and struck out six in a 2-0 win over Texas-Arlington (13-10) to start the day. Tayler Van Acker scored both runs on a single in the third inning.

Foti then allowed three hits and struck out three in a 1-0 win over Marist (6-4), with Heather Harrison recording the lone RBI.

The Rebels continue the tournament today against Bryant at 9 a.m. and Buffalo at 11:30 a.m.


■ BASEBALL — Cody Clark doubled home Bobby Shiroky in the bottom of the ninth inning to give CSN (21-6, 9-1) a 4-3 victory over the College of Southern Idaho, and the Coyotes later picked up a 5-4 win to earn the sweep at Morse Stadium.

Evan Van Hoosier went 3-for-3 with an RBI triple and two runs scored in the first game and went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI in the second.

The teams play another doubleheader at noon today.

■ SOFTBALL — CSN (19-14, 12-10) dropped a pair of 6-5 decisions to Western Nevada College at Carson City.

The teams play another doubleheader at noon today.
