Mayweather to fight Marcos Maidana on May 3; venue TBD

Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced his opponent for his next fight on Monday afternoon on Twitter.

“I will be fighting Marcos Maidana May 3rd on Pay-per-view Showtime/CBS,” Mayweather tweeted on his 37th birthday.

After Mayweather defeated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on Sept. 14, he announced he’d set the date of his next fight. Mayweather (45-0, 26 KOs) received a record $41.5 million for the second of six fights in his Showtime deal.

Maidana, 30, (35-3, 31 KOs) defeated Adrien Broner by unanimous decision in December to set up his welterweight title bout with Mayweather.

There’s no venue announced for the fight, leading boxing writers to speculate whether Mayweather will move his title defense to the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn. His last eight fights have been in his hometown at the MGM Grand Garden.
