Injury forces Daniel Cormier to pull out of UFC rematch against Jon Jones

The blockbuster Ultimate Fighting Championship rematch between light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former champ Jon Jones will not take place this month, and it has nothing to do with the recent legal troubles of Jones.

Cormier suffered an injury and has been forced to withdraw from the main event of UFC 197, sources close to the organization confirmed.

The news was first reported by BJPenn.com.

Cormier had been scheduled to defend the belt against Jones on April 23 at the MGM Grand.

Jones was arrested Tuesday for violating his probation after he was cited for drag racing in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He spent two nights in jail, but the fight was still a go after he received an amended sentence that did not include a curfew or travel restrictions.

His probation stems from a hit-and-run incident last April for which he was ultimately stripped of the belt. Jones last competed in January 2015 when he retained the belt with a unanimous decision over Cormier.

Cormier then won the vacant belt with a submission of Anthony Johnson in May.

Jones and Cormier have engaged in a prolonged feud, which includes a brawl in the lobby of the MGM Grand after a news conference in 2014.

UFC officials have not announced a replacement opponent for Jones or a rescheduled date for the fight. UFC 197 includes a flyweight title fight between Henry Cejudo and champion Demetrious Johnson.
