Whelen series back at Bullring
The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series returns to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Bullring on Saturday, and some of the usual names are near the top of the standings.
Jay Beasley, who won the first two races, leads the NASCAR Super Late Models standings with 100 points. Alex Haase is next with 94 points, and four-time series champion Scott Gafforini is third with 92.
Defending NASCAR Super Stocks champion James Wingard leads with 107 points, and Kayli Barker (101 points) and Kolleen Dresser (100) are second and third, respectively.
In NASCAR Bombers, defending champion Pete Meyer is first with 106 points, just two points in front of Nathan Boss.
■ STAYING HOME — Exotics Racing co-owners Romain Thievin and David Perriset were the EURO-RACECAR team owner champions last season, but they’re staying on this side of the Atlantic Ocean and competing at the Bullring.
Thievin wanted to remain in Las Vegas to spend time with his newborn boy, and he is off to a promising start. He is fourth in the Super Late Models, and Perriset is tied for 12th.
Thievin and Perriset were honored in December in Charlotte, N.C., for their Euro team championship.
Thievin also was second in the upper-level Elite Division. Perriset was seventh in the Open Division.
■ STRONG START — Las Vegan Dylan Kwasniewski is tied for second through three races in the NASCAR K&N East Series. He has two top-10s, including a victory at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
In his most recent race, Saturday in Pensacola, Fla., Kwasniewski finished seventh after qualifying 22nd.
He next races in Richmond, Va., on Thursday.
Kwasniewski, a senior at Faith Lutheran High School, won the West Series championship last season.
