Never too late to start new project

Most people who buy a home dread the thought of paying off a 30-year mortgage. Bob Blum, an executive for the Las Vegas 51s Triple-A baseball team, is looking forward to the challenge.

Blum recently purchased a house, and while signing the paperwork he noticed his final payment is scheduled for May 2040.

“I said to the gal, ‘Do you promise me that? Is it a contract?’ ” the 89-year-old Blum said, laughing.

But it’s never too late to start a new project. About two years ago, Blum set out to write a book. “Started Talking at Eleven Months and Still Talking,” published by CreateSpace, an company, is set to be released in early June.

Blum’s memoirs cover his lifetime of broadcasting, before and after he moved to Las Vegas in 1973. Just to name a few of his duties, he called games for the Oakland Raiders and was the radio voice for UNLV basketball and football.

“It’s got some great stories in it, if I say so myself,” Blum said of his 130-page book that features 20 pages of photos. Blum is pictured with Al Davis, Willie Mays, Jerry Tarkanian, John Wooden and Abe Lincoln.

■ PLAYING A ROUND — Christina Kim is not afraid to show off her body or speak her mind. Kim once posed nude (key parts hidden) for ESPN The Magazine, and she wrote a book that partly exposes the sexual side of the LPGA Tour. Excerpts from Kim’s book were highlighted on the website

Excerpt: “It’s not easy to get (sex) on the LPGA Tour. We’re like a traveling circus that barnstorms in and out of a new town every week, and this vagabond lifestyle makes it hard to meet quality people, or get serious with those you do come across.”

Leftovers editor’s note: Christina, the next time you swing through Vegas, don’t hesitate to call me.

Another excerpt: “If one of the guys on the PGA Tour is feeling lonely there is always a nice selection of so-called rope-hopers, those pretty young things who show up at tournaments in short-skirts and do-me heels … hoping to attract a wandering eye.”

Editor’s note: Does Tiger Woods know about this?

Last excerpt: “Contrary to what many people think, we are not the Lesbians Playing Golf Association. By my count there are no more than two-dozen gay women playing the tour right now. Considering there are 230 active members, you’re only talking about 10 percent of the players. I understand that thanks to Howard Stern and Internet porn, many guys are keenly interested in girl-on-girl action, but to every player I know the issue is not that big a deal.”

■ GONE, NOT FORGOTTEN — At a West Virginia memorial service for 29 miners tragically killed April 5, Vice President Joe Biden drew a roar from the crowd by mentioning football coach Rich Rodriguez.

Biden recalled the miners as “… fathers, grandfathers, sons, nephews, husbands. They loved hunting, fishing, riding horses and four-wheelers. They hated the way Coach Rodriguez left West Virginia for Michigan.”

It should be noted Michigan fans also hate that Coach Rodriguez left West Virginia.
