The first tear slid slowly down his right cheek, unhurried in its progress as if every speck of skin should absorb its purpose. The connection between losing and UNLV football was accepted for so long, unfeigned emotion following a defeat had over time become indiscernible.
HOW THEY SCORED
North Texas didn’t make life easy on UNLV quarterback Caleb Herring, pressuring him throughout its 36-14 win over the Rebels in Wednesday’s Heart of Dallas Bowl.
North Texas took advantage of a tiring UNLV defense to score four touchdowns in the second half and win the Heart of Dallas Bowl 36-14 today before an announced crowd of 38,380 at Cotton Bowl Stadium.
Bill O’Brien is leaving Penn State less than two years after replacing Joe Paterno and returning to the NFL with the Houston Texans to coach the worst team in the league.
North Texas head coach Dan McCarney is 60, and in a 14-month span in 2012 and 2013, he suffered a major stroke and underwent quadruple bypass surgery but returned to work five days after the latter procedure. That’s him. Tough as nails and a little wacko.
Having a winning season three times in 20 years doesn’t give you much to get excited about. But this season was exciting.
This is UNLV’s first game without a playoff-type feel, the first game that winning or losing won’t have greater effects on the season. Win or lose the Heart of Dallas Bowl, this will be considered a successful season. But the Rebels didn’t come here to lose.
Most coaches say they value special teams, but North Texas lives by that belief.
