ProSoccer Challenge to return with Rapids-Chivas USA match

Major League Soccer will return to Las Vegas in February with a preseason game between Colorado and Chivas USA at Sam Boyd Stadium.

The second annual Las Vegas ProSoccer Challenge is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16 at Sam Boyd Stadium. Colorado and Chivas played in the inaugural event last Feb. 15, with Chivas winning 3-0 before a crowd of 8,258.

United World Sports, which promotes the annual USA Sevens Rugby Tournament in Las Vegas, will again host the game. It will coincide with the Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup International Showcase youth tournament and the Las Vegas Silver Mug International adult tourney.

“The feedback we got from MLS and from the teams themselves was very positive,” United World Sports Vice President Dan Lyle said. “Everyone had a good experience, and we expect a huge uplift in attendance. With the move to Sunday night, we’re expecting at least 9,000 youth players from the Mayor’s Cup and a few thousand adults from the Silver Mug.”

The Rapids are battling for a spot in the MLS postseason. Colorado (12-9-9) has 45 points and is tied for fourth place with Los Angeles in the Western Conference.

The top five teams in each division make the playoffs, scheduled to begin this month. Chivas is last in the Western Conference at 6-17-8 (26 points).

Tickets for the ProSoccer Challenge, priced at $20 and $40 for adults and $15 and $20 for youth, are on sale at unlvtickets.com and at 702-739-3267.
