Gruden reportedly hires Callahan as Raiders QB coach

Updated January 26, 2018 - 4:25 pm

Jon Gruden again will have a Callahan on his Raiders coaching staff.

The head coach reportedly has hired Brian Callahan as his quarterbacks coach. Brian’s father, Bill Callahan, served as offensive coordinator during the entirety of Gruden’s 1998 to 2001 tenure with the Raiders.

Albert Breer of MMQB first reported the hiring Friday. Brian last served as the Detroit Lions’ quarterbacks coach before being fired this month.

Bill Callahan now is the Washington Redskins’ offensive line coach. When Gruden was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the 2001 season, Callahan was named head coach.

The elder Callahan occupied the role for two years. In the first, he led the NFL’s top-ranked offense to the Super Bowl, where the Raiders fell to Gruden and the Bucs’ top-ranked defense.

Gruden will have a pronounced influence in the quarterbacks’ position room, working closely with Derek Carr while calling offensive plays on game day. Gruden signed a 10-year, $100 million contract this month.
