Rebel men’s golfer Kitayama nabs Mountain West weekly honor

UNLV sophomore Kurt Kitayama was named Mountain West men’s golfer of the week on Tuesday.

Kitayama shot a career-best 6-under 207 last weekend in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational to help the Rebels post a one-shot victory over top-ranked California in the 18-team event at Tempe, Ariz. Kitayama tied for fifth, along with teammate Kevin Penner.

■ SOFTBALL — UNLV junior Amanda Oliveto was named Mountain West softball pitcher of the week, the second time she’s been honored this season. Oliveto pitched a complete game and struck out eight to beat Fresno State on Friday.

■ MEN’S SWIMMING — UNLV placed five swimmers on the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic Scholar-Athlete Squad.

Senior Cody Roberts (3.36 grade point average, West Richland, Wash.) and junior David Szele (3.26 GPA, Budapest) are repeat members of the honors squad. First-time honorees are sophomores Balint Batka (3.73, Budapest), Joe Riggert (3.10, Vacaville, Calif.) and Matt Roe (3.74, Starwood, Wash.).
