Rehabbing Meche pitches Omaha to win over 51s

Gil Meche pitched five effective innings Saturday in his second minor league rehabilitation start, leading the Omaha Royals to an 8-4 victory over the 51s in the Pacific Coast League in Omaha, Neb.

Meche, a 2007 All-Star with Kansas City, has been on the major league disabled list since July 18 with a strained lower back. He held Las Vegas to one run on three hits and three walks and struck out two.

Leading 2-1, the Royals (47-66) broke open the game with a six-run sixth inning, highlighted by four RBI doubles. Mario Lisson, John Suomi and Irving Falu hit consecutive two-out doubles that accounted for four runs.

Cory Aldridge, who also had an RBI double in the sixth, hit a solo homer in the fourth.

Angel Sanchez hit a three-run homer in the ninth for the 51s (57-58), who lost for only the third time in 13 games.

T.J. Beam (6-3) gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings for the 51s.
