As hard as we try, we just can’t shake the disturbing image Rory McIlroy posted on Instagram the day after helping Europe retain the Ryder Cup.
The photo, taken in Scotland in the wee small hours of Monday morning, shows a shirtless McIlroy wearing a long red wig and a kilt — and you know what that means.
The fun-loving Northern Irishman, 25, says he has no idea how he ended up in that outfit because he pretty much blacked out after midnight. We’re guessing the world’s top-ranked golfer followed up his 350-yard bombs on the links with a bevy of Jager bombs in the ensuing bash.
After McIlroy won the British Open in July, one of his pals filled the Claret Jug with Jagermeister.
Despite the Americans losing to the Europeans for the eighth time in the past 10 Ryder Cups, there were no hard feelings between the teams, which partied together during an extended 19th hole.
McIlroy said the U.S. squad played a prank on him at the hotel. After he accepted an invitation to party in the American team room, McIlroy was stopped at the door by two security guards who wouldn’t let him in.
“I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ and he said he’d go and check,” McIlroy said. “So I’m standing there at the U.S. team door for five minutes, which just felt so strange.”
This might explain McIlroy’s revealing outfit, as hot chicks always get into clubs before guys. Only he didn’t look so hot.
After being turned away at the door, McIlroy retreated to the European room to find a few American players waiting for him.
“They had obviously planned it and had a good laugh at me,” he said.
■ MACK DADDY — We’re not sure if McIlroy is going to become the next John Daly or Tiger Woods, as he appears to be a big hitter on and off the golf course.
Since breaking off a long-term relationship with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, McIlroy has dated multiple models. But he’s trying to keep things in perspective.
Asked during a recent BBC documentary what he would be if he hadn’t taken up golf, McIlroy replied, “A virgin.”
■ PIERCED AIR — NBA star Paul Pierce shared a story this week about how he ended up flying to Las Vegas in August on a private jet with actor Al Pacino, who performed a one-man show at The Mirage.
“I was scheduled to go check out his show in Vegas, and it just so happens the day I was leaving, he was leaving,” Pierce said. “So my host called me and asked me did I want to fly with Al and go to the show, and it was perfect timing.
“So me and a couple of my friends, we had a chance to get on a plane, meet him, talk to him. He’s a cool dude, down-to-earth dude. So it was fun.”
When introducing the 5-foot-7-inch Pacino to his pals, we can only hope the 6-7 Pierce didn’t crack, “Say hello to my little friend.”
■ TO PROTECT AND TWEET — As the Royals stole seven bases in Tuesday’s incredible 9-8 wild-card win over the Oakland Athletics, Kansas City cops urged residents to stop stealing. At least until the game ended.
“We really need everyone to not commit crimes and drive safely right now,” @kcpolice wrote on Twitter. “We’d like to hear the @royals clinch this.”
