Despite sliding much lower than expected in the major league draft, Xavier Scruggs will not be returning for his senior season at UNLV.
Scruggs signed with the St. Louis Cardinals and recently started playing for the Batavia Muckdogs, the Cardinals’ short-season Class-A affiliate in Batavia, N.Y.
St. Louis selected Scruggs in the 19th round on June 6. He was projected to go in the first 10 rounds of the draft.
Scruggs, a first and third baseman, produced one of the top offensive seasons in Rebels history, batting .379 with 20 home runs and 65 RBIs. He was named Player of the Year in the Mountain West Conference.
UNLV junior catcher Michael Brenly signed with the Chicago Cubs after being selected in the 36th round.
Durango High School shortstop Niko Vasquez was the highest drafted local prospect, going in the third round to the Cardinals. Vasquez was assigned to Johnson City (Tenn.) of the rookie Appalachian League.
Also signing with the Cardinals was College of Southern Nevada outfielder Devin Shepherd, an 11th-round pick.
CSN catcher Braeden Schlehuber signed with the Atlanta Braves, who drafted him in the fourth round.
CSN pitcher Colby Shreve, a sophomore from Bonanza High, was a sixth-round pick by the Philadelphia Phillies. Shreve still is negotiating with the Phillies.
The deadline for draft picks to sign is Aug. 15.
